Animated Videos for Learning Spanish

You might have seen some animated short videos popping up on SpanishTown.ca over the last couple of months.  As we learn and experiment you will likely see the quality improve.  Our first videos were low resolution due to technical issues but we are now able to create them in full 1080p.

The videos are hosted on YouTube where we have our own little channel started.  We also embed them into the website either on new pages or with their corresponding vocabulary.  If you are watching on YouTube then please subscribe and leave a comment.  Let us know what works and what doesn’t so that we can improve them going forward.

Some of the videos will focus on the basic vocabulary while others will be a little more advanced and contain short conversations.

Here is an example of one of our recent videos where we go over the basic shapes in Spanish:

Shapes in Spanish

In this video a family discusses the items they need for a day of fun at the beach.  This style of video that is a little more advanced and doesn’t have any translations embedded in the video itself.

La playa

We are committed to producing more of these videos but they do take a considerable investment of time.  Please subscribe on YouTube to the our channel.  The more we see that number grow the more time we will be investing into producing new videos.

SpanishTown.ca and Responsive Design

The blog here has been languishing for quite a while but it is not because we haven’t been busy.  In fact, we have been so busy that we had no extra time for the blog.  Over the next few posts we will be going over some of the changes and additions that we have made to SpanishTown.ca.

Responsive Design

This was and continues to be a real challenge.  We have redesigned almost all of our pages so that our visitors can have the best possible experience no matter what device or browser they are using.  After testing on different devices, screens sizes, and browsers we are mostly confident that the site should work whether you use a smartphone, tablet or PC running Chrome, Safari, IE, Firefox or Opera.   These browsers cover 94% of our visitors to SpanishTown.ca.

We hope that you enjoy the site on whatever device you choose to use.

Counting

Moving Forward

You may have noticed a few changes that have been taking place on SpanishTown.ca over the last week.  We have begun to transition away from using Flash and moving towards HTML5 for our Spanish language audio.  The first pages to see the change are our “Counting in Spanish” pages, from 0 – 100.

More Devices

By making these changes we are opening up the site to students using Windows Phones, iPads and iPhones.  The larger “tiles” also make it easier for those using touch interfaces on Windows 8 devices and iOS.

Browsers

These changes should work on any modern browser such as IE, Chrome, Firefox or Safari.  Just make sure you are using a current version.

The Plan

Eventually all of our audio vocabulary pages will be moving to HTML5.  It will take some time to convert all of our vocabulary (we have a lot) so be patient.

Check out some of the pages:

Count to 10 in Spanish
Count to 20 in Spanish
Count to 30 in Spanish
Count to 40 in Spanish
Count to 50 in Spanish
Count to 60 in Spanish
Count to 70 in Spanish
Count to 80 in Spanish
Count to 90 in Spanish
Count to 100 in Spanish

Spanish For Kids Receives an Update

Grade1SpanishPage

New Spanish Vocabulary

We’ve been hard at work over the last few months preparing a major update to our Spanish for Kids Grade 1 pages.

The vocabulary has been reorganized into 10 themed free Spanish lessons.  Each lesson contains a number of vocabulary pages.  A lot of new vocabulary has been added and all of the Flash audio has been remade.

Each themed lesson includes counting in Spanish with audio up to 100.  In lesson 1, learn to count to 10.  In lesson 2, count to 20 and so on.

50VocabSheets50 New Spanish Vocabulary Sheets

To compliment this massive amount of work we’ve also added 50 completely free, fully illustrated, Spanish vocabulary sheets in PDF format for downloading and printing.  Teachers are free to download and print them for use in their classrooms.

Spanish Lesson Booklets Coming Soon

We are still not finished updating the Spanish Grade 1 section.  Next on our list is the creation of our Lesson Booklets to accompany each Spanish lesson.  Hopefully we’ll start publishing those booklets early in 2012.

Feedback

We have scoured these new sections for errors and problems with links.  If you find any please let us know so that we can get those repaired.

Feel free to comment on the material as well.  We are always looking at ways to improve the site and the materials.

Spanish Present Tense App on Your Windows Phone 7

April 6, 2011 1 comment

RegVerbsPhoneWe are excited to offer our very first mobile app exclusively for Windows Phone 7!

From our Marketplace description:

Studying Spanish? The Spanish Grammar – Present Tense app is designed for students learning the Spanish language, specifically the present tense. It provides students with a quick and easy reference to the rules, exceptions and uses of the present tense. Essentially it is a present tense cheat sheet for your windows phone 7. It provides you with sample regular and irregular verbs along with their English translation and their present tense conjugation

This app is designed using Latin American Spanish and as such it does not contain “vosotros”. It is not a translation tool or “verb conjugation app”.

This is our first foray into mobile apps so we welcome feedback.  We picked Windows Phone 7 for a number of reasons.  We love it from a consumer perspective, the developer tools are amazing and our apps won’t be lost among hundreds of thousands of other apps on other phones.
